Volubilis & Volubilia

Situated at the foot of Mount Zehroun, in the Gharb plain, Volubilis / Walili is an ancient city founded in the 3rd century BC by the Berbers. The name comes from the violin species of ipomoea which then grew on the banks of the Khuman river.

Delimited by the ramparts built in 168-169 during the reign of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, this city is a true cultural palimpsest where the remains, imperfectly scratched, of the Moorish, Phoenician, Punic and Roman presences mix together.

From the swallowing of the centuries, there remain beautiful monuments (arch of Caracalla, basilica, Capitol, baths of Gallien). They can be seen from the road from Meknes to Moulay Idriss.

Volubilis was then the heart of a flourishing commerce. Pride of the city, the presses transformed the noble fruits of  vines and olive trees.
